Just thinking about Hasbro's current direction of taking Clue into the international intrigue genre, and how James Bond would be the perfect way to do that. With the impending premiere of Skyfall, I thought a Clue tie-in would be great marketing. The characters are the most important thing here ... locations are easy, as are the weapons (which should be terrific for Bond), so maybe I'll go back and add them later or not ...

How about you? What would be your favorite licensed/branded editions of Clue/do that hasn't yet been created?

I know there are numerous threads scattered about though the years for individual ideas, but thought it would be fun to put them all in one place. So feel free to link to a previous discussion as well ...

JAMES BOND 007 Cluedo (has to be a Cluedo edition for obvious reasons) ...

Dr. Black -- Blofeld
Miss Scarlett -- Moneypenny
Col. Mustard -- James Bond
Mrs. White -- Mary Goodnight (or Bill Tanner)
Rev. Mr. Green -- Felix Leiter (the US connection)
Mrs. Peacock -- M
Prof. Plum -- Q

First - If you haven't seen Skyfall, you should.

Second - I can't see Bond working. (Out of Interest, what about the other way round with the suspects, if the villians were the suspects and Bond was the victim)

Have to agree with Black that it wouldn't work, as I can't see how Miss Moneypenny or Q would be in a position to kill Blofeld. (Not that Hasbro are concerned with realism).

And although some Bond baddies would be good suspects (Goldfinger as Mustard, Rosa Klebb as White, Elektra King as Scarlett) having the villains as suspects wouldn't work either as they always get killed off in the films. (Again, not that Hasbro are concerned with realism).

A few years back I thought they could make a Friends edition. With Rachel as Scarlett, Joey as Mustard, Phoebe as White, Chandler as Green, Monica as Peacock and Ross as Plum. Wasn't too sure who the victim would be though.

Locations could be the Coffee Shop, Monica's flat, Chandler & Joey's flat, and then Stairway, Lobby and another.

It could work but what would the weapons be? Janice could be the victim.

Well, it's not so much that James Bond won't work, as much as that particular casting. It doesn't have to be Blofeld, and it doesn't have to be Moneypenny or Q (both of whom I believe have been in the field and could make a realistic scenario for taking out he villain). From the looks of Skyfall, there could be a direct tie-in with those specific characters making it much more realistic. The reality is with a franchise-based Clue game, you are drawing on the well-known elements from a fan favorite, and it's not always going to make sense. Obviously the new Sherlock Cluedo won't work based on plausibility alone. But there's any number of ways to make Bond work ... heck if they could make Casino Royale work, then you could make Clue work.

It just hit me, if they were to remake the Clue movie with a new cast (NOT THAT THEY EVER WILL), there's already a perfect cast on TV ... "30 Rock". It strikes me that this would be a great collection of comedians, whether built around the series or not. The only challenge I have is what is the best assignment for the men. Jack McBrayer makes for a great Green a la the original movie, but Alec Baldwin makes for a fantastic traditional Green. But he also makes for a good Mull/Mustard replacement. And I could see Tracy Morgan as any of the men played a different way.

Mr. Boddy
Rip Torn

Mustard
Tracy Morgan, or Alec Baldwin

Plum
Jack McBrayer

Green
Jack McBreyer, Tracy Morgan, or Alec Baldwin

Peacock
Tina Fey

Scarlet
Jane Krakowski

White
Elaine Stritch

Who killed Young Mr Grace? Was it Captain Peacock with the rifle on the first floor? Was it Mr Grainger with the scissors in the executive washroom because he wasn't allowed the key? Did Mrs Slocombe hit him over the head with the bustier behind the ladies' counter? Did Miss Brahms spike him on her pump after he'd been a peeping tom in the ladies changing room? Did Mr Humphries strangle him with his tape measurer in the men's changing room for reasons I don't even want to think of? Did Mr Lucas feed him a poisoned toad-in-the-hole in the canteen?

Now that Disney bought LucasFilm and has promised a new Star Wars trilogy soon, perhaps a Clue game based on that:

Who killed Darth Vader?

Scarlet -- Princess Leia
Mustard -- Han Solo
White -- C3P0
Green -- Chewbacca
Peacock -- R2D2
Plum -- Luke Skywalker

Frankly, I don't really think there are any good ideas for branded clue games. It's been said many times before: Clue is Miss Scarlet, Colonel Mustard, Mrs. White, ect. All the branded games, official and otherwise, just halfheartedly slap a color onto a series of irrelevant characters, put in some new rooms and weapons, and pass it off as official. And isn't that just about the whole reason we hate DTS and the like?

With all due respect, I don't think you are looking at this the right way.

Of course you are entitled to your option, but the reason I hate DTS is because Hasbro tried to fundamentally change Clue. Clue is Miss Scarlet, Col. Mustard, Mrs. white, et al., but it's also more than just names, it's who those characters are, their background, how they relate to each other and the traditional milieu in which they exist. And Hasbro tried to change that, and in a halfhearted way that pandered to a younger demographic they were so desperate to court, by throwing tradition under the train.

The branded games are anything but. Unlike DTS, we KNOW they are not supposed to be Clue. Instead, they pay tribute to Clue using good-natured parody. They take some of our favorite subjects like the Simpsons and dress them up as our favorite Clue characters, and further delight and amuse us by placing them in their familiar environments via-a-vis Clue. It's Homer Simpson AS Mr. Green, not Homer Simpson the green character. The better editions relate the branded characters to the traditional characters, taking on their attributes we've come to know and love over the last 60 years. But these editions seek to pay homage to the original, not replace it as DTS tried to do. And to that end, I welcome them into the Clue family ... They introduce tongue-in-cheek humor, fun and levity into the genre in the same way the original movie did, and keep new, fresh editions coming between traditional updates. The branded games also have the potential to bring new players into the Clue world unlike some bland, generic murder/mystery game makeover like DTS that seeks to leverage a pretty cast and tabloid exploits to draw new players.

The branded editions are supposed to be silly fun, and nothing else. And every edition is not going to be for everybody, that's the beauty of them -- they are designed to appeal to the fans of both. While I am a huge fan of the Simpsons Clue, I could care less about the 24 edition, but I do respect the fans of that show might find the game quite entertaining (though I will criticize it for the overall poor quality of execution, which is another complaint against DTS).

So, while I respect your opinion, I most certainly don't share it.

And Zoo, thank you for reminding me of something I had forgotten, the licensed branded editions are at their core supposed to be fun. My James Bond idea started when I thought about how great Judy Dench as M would be as Mrs. Peacock. And while she makes a great character, I realize now the rest of the cast isn't that much fun. This is one of the reasons I don't think the "24" edition is that great, even though I liked the series. And you reminded me that good parodies must have some thought put into them, not just half-hearted character assignments -- and there have been some exceptional ones: Hitchcock, Simpsons, Scooby Doo, and Haunted Mansion to name some of the best.

I've since stumbled across this fan-made custom Clue game, and realized how great it would be to have Blofeld's cat as one of the suspects -- parody at it's finest. Yes it's pure farce to entertain this, but that's what's great about the branded editions. They AREN'T Clue, they aren't supposed to be. And that's what makes them work, whereas DTS and their ilk fail tragically ...

With this in mind, a much more entertaining Bond edition would be one based around a specific movie, like Goldfinger (casting "Pusshy" Galore as Miss Scarlet), or better yet, a parody of a parody -- Austin Powers.

Who Killed Dr. Evil?

Scarlet -- Felicity Shagwell
Mustard -- Austin Powers
White -- Mini Me
Green -- Number 2
Peacock -- Frau Farbissina
Plum -- Scott Evil

In the latter, it addresses having good guys and bad guys together, all who have a motive for killing Dr. Evil, and also more or less match up with their Clue counterparts.

I remember those cards. I think they were possible victims.

I don't think movie based clue games would work, video games maybe.

That's what I like about you Black, you are a man of few words. Wink

However, I think Warner Bros. and Hasbro would disagree with you based on the success of Harry Potter Clue/do. The Hitchcock version works pretty well too ... But that's just me.

Thanks for recalling the thread from which those suspects originally came!!

Video games sounds like a decent idea! There's a few games (the four Hoyle games, classic card and board stuff) in the Sierra library where you can play against their protagonists: it would be great if you could have Gabriel Knight as Rev Green, Leisure Suit Larry as Professor Plum, King Graham as Mustard... perhaps Roger Wilco as Mrs White, Laura Bow as Ms Scarlett... perhaps include popular sidekicks or villains...

Back To The Future Clue

While traveling through time, someone accidentally killed one of Marty's relatives, and changed the future. Now they must find out who did it, where, and with what, and get back to the future (the center of the board) before they are all erased from time.

Scarlet -- Jennifer
Mustard -- Old Biff
White -- Einstein
Green -- Marty
Peacock -- Clara
Plum -- Doc Brown (I especially like this casting)

Hover Board
De Lorean
Colt Peacemaker
1.21 Jigawatt lightning bolt
Plutonium
JVC camcorder

Enchantment Under the Sea Dance 1955 (Ballroom)
Lou's Malt Shop 1955 -- shortcut to 1885 (kitchen)
Cafe 80's 2015 -- shortcut to 1985 (Conservatory)
McFly House Hilldale 2015 (Billiard Room)
ClockTower hill valley courthouse 1985 -- shortcut to 2015 (Study)
McFly House Lyon Estates 1985 (Hall)
Shonash Ravine 1885 (Library)
Palace Saloon 1885 -- shortcut to 1955 (Lounge)
Biff Tannen's Pleasure Paradise Casino & Hotel -- Alternate 1985 (Dining Room)

I liked the idea of each "room" on the board representing a different time from the movie, and making the De Lorean a weapon. This franchise offers many other options for weapons and locations, so this is kind of a first stab at it (no pun intended). The hardest part with this one is the suspects, since the only ones who make sense are the ones who have traveled through time. I threw Einstein in for fun, as its technically possible (versus one of Doc Brown and Clara's kids, the only others established as traveling through time in the movies). I toyed with the idea of who murdered Biff, since that is more Clue-like, and everyone has a motive, but it would mean adding non-established time travelers like George and Lorraine, instead. I left the lightning bolt as a weapon because it's kind of fun, even though it's silly, but maybe it should be something like Marvin Berry's Guitar?
