I'm afraid my feelings over the musical are not the kindest...

I saw the opera in Chicago..... my singing class is hoping (still undecided) doing to play and I'd be cast Andre or Raoul (I hope not Raoul, because I can't stand his character... at least in the movie)

My favorite songs are "Notes/Prima Donna" and "Masquerade"

I don't really know much about the musical, to be honest. The only song I know is the one that goes "The Phantom of the Opera is here! Inside my mind!" I don't know if it's intentionally funny but it always makes me smirk.

Just got back from the Las Vegas version of Phantom!

Loved it!! The sets were gorgeous. The costumes were amazing. The singing was ehh. But the chandelier scared the **** out of me! I was right under it. I screamed.

I remember seeing this on Broadway when I went to New York last year. It was fantastic! Very Happy I remember during the "Phantom of the Opera" sequence I thought, "So this is why people make such a huge deal out of Broadway, eh?"

Singing Music of the Night at a concert on Sunday. I'm fairly confident that I will do well... with the exception of belting out the G4 (yes it's lowered from a G#) in "Let your soul take you where you long to be."

I'll let you guys know. Hopefully it'll be filmed.

Phantom has awesome music but the English lyrics are indeed very poor. I prefer the Dutch ones: eg the line
"The Phantom of the Opera is there inside my mind"
becomes
"Het spookt hier in de opera, het spookt, ook door mijn hoofd."
roughly translates to the opera is haunted, and so is my mind. Besides the bonus of having a pun on a Dutch proverb, it concentrates on the oh sound (o as in ghost), giving the text an extra spooky effect.

That's very interesting, but I am fascinated at things that are sometimes lost in translation. However, it seems the translation improved in the Dutch version, because I'm assuming Phantom was written in English first (it is Andrew Lloyd Webber, right?)

Jup. It was initially writte by Stilgoe, but Webber didn't like those texts, since he thought they were too clever and not romantic. He then had debuting Charles Hart re-do the lyrics in the gooey form they still have to this day. It was translated into Dutch by comedian and text wizard Seth Gaaikema, who also made a very clever translation of My Fair Lady.

Out of curiosity, how's "Love Never Dies"? I've heard a lot of bad things about the story line.

Love Never Dies is good as a stand alone musical. As a sequel I'm not fond of it because all the characters are completely different in personality.

BTW I saw Phantom of the Opera in May.

On Broadway? It looks like the inside of the theater I saw it in two years ago.
