Animated signature banners...

Post by Tum » Sun Jan 15, 2006 8:14 pm

I'm finding the animated images/gifs annoying and am thinking of disabling signatures completely.

they follow the size requirements....their not on your server, therefore not using bandwith....i don't see a problem :? if you don't want to look at them, you can right click them and click don't view image or hide image or w/e

We're nowhere near our bandwidth limit, so that's not the problem. The problem is that I find the blinking annoying and since I'm responsible for the site design, I think we're not going to allow animated signatures or avatars. Either that, or we're going to disable the function completely.

I have spent the last 40 minates re making my banner, it is now as slow as it can possibly be made. I'll do the avator next.

Edit:

Avator also slowed to as slow as possible

btw i've had many moving ones in the past including rent, etc. So i'm hoping this shant be a problem

I agree, it's a bit distracting
Oh, it's England. Croquet on the lawn, tea in silver teapots, sherry before dinner. One simply has to maintain one's standards!

I'm going to have to agree.
How do you know what kind of pictures they are if you're such a lay-dee?

It does appear to blink, though, and is distracting when people read through the thread. The avatars weren't as irritating because they're off on the side and don't affect readability.

What's wrong with a static banner?

like i mentioned before, there is the button to make images go away. You can simply set your browser to block my banner if your choose so. 4 people have complained, You, who only complained after tum did, and the other 2, who always follow in your footsteps. I do not think it is distracting, for it is not part of the text, i hardly post anymore, and so i feel this should not be a concern, the problem with a solid banner is to make a solid banner it does not take 1 hour to make and a half hour to remake slower to please people who think it "blinks". I think the big problem here, is something you yourself have said to me before, I can go through our IM convo if you'd like me to find your exact words, but i believe it was mentioned that you don't want people to advertise their clue websites/forums on your forum so you aren't "linked" in any way to them, unfortunitly you are a member of my forum, so you are, indeed, linked to it. David's banner was advertising his site which you found offence in the fact that he said pete's cluedo site was the most in depth. I think the real problem here is your problem with people advertising their own clue websites, and thats silly because we all work as hard as you to put up a website worthy of the name Clue so I do not see the problem...

A few comments:

First, I have a links page for people with decent sites like cluedofan.com who want to advertise their websites so that theory is quite incorrect. Admittedly, I won't put Pete's site on there because he stole from me. Not to mention the fact that the last time I checked it out, he had inappropriate - if not pornographic - images on his website that I find distasteful.

Second, many new members will not know how to block annimated banners. This poses a problem as they will not see the mood and atmosphere we are trying to create visually.

Third, the consensus here is that people don't want them. As you said, you rarely post here anymore, so I fail to see how you should care much. If you use yours on your own forums, your time didn't go to waste. Furthermore, as I obey the rules on your forums, I would appreciate that you respect mine as well.

Therefore, I'm making it official. No more annimated banners.
