What If Hasbro Held A Contest To Replace A Weapon?

Post by Murder by Death » Sun Aug 06, 2017 1:40 pm

We all know Hasbro replaced Mrs. White with Dr. Orchid, but without giving us a voice in the choice.

So what if Hasbro gave us a voice in replacing a weapon? Which one would you replace? And if you have an idea about which weapon you'd like to see replace it, post that here too.

In case you need some help, here's a complete list, or make up a new one of your own:

I'd like a special Dutch edition with a ballpoint pen token...

I think it's entirely justifiable to retire the lead pipe. As has been pointed out, they're not really around anymore, unlike all the other weapons, and without Hasbro setting the game specifically in an older time period, it's unlikely a piece of antique lead piping has just been lying in wait around the house.

I think the poison would be the best choice to replace it. Then the options for killing become a little more varied: shoot, stab, strangle, bludgeon 2x, poison. I'd even be okay with an axe joining the lineup instead (and Hasbro already has the mold for one in the archives, thanks to the DTS edition).

I'd be very surprised if Hasbro ever did a major marketing push with a weapon vote, though. It's cute when it's 60+ Monopoly tokens, but I don't doubt more than a few uppity adults would take issue with Hasbro asking families to join in a vote for a murder implement.
"But look what happened to the cook!"

The lead pipe is my favourite weapon. I voted the knife to even the odds a bit. I figure most people would justifiably go after the redundant tools. I'm not sure what I would introduce.

I voted Wrench. I think it has to be one of the blunt instruments to even things up. Candlestick has to stay, as they fit in nicely. I quite like the idea of a rusty old lead pipe lying around in a big posh manor house, so I voted Wrench. Also, because its a Spanner in the UK versions, and it would take a fair whack to do serious damage.

I'd replace it with a different murder method, so probably the Poison.

I don't think they should change up the weapons. But if they have to nix something it should be the pipe. I only say this because it is probably the thing the youths will be the least familiar with as we go further along in life.

But look what happens when Clue panders to youths. We get stuff like Discover the Secrets and The Classic Mystery Game. :?

That's a fair point, even though you've been advocating for Hasbro to do it. Monopoly did hold a contest to add a new token in 1999. They then held a contest to replace one token of the standard set of 8 in 2013. Then the 2017 contest put all 8 up for replacement with their huge 64 set of options, in which only 3 original tokens were replaced. So all things considered the standard set of Monopoly tokens is now 4 original tokens and 4 new ones. Given the success of the Monopoly campaigns, I'm not sure that being murder weapons is going to be a problem, anymore than it already is for marketing and advertising a family game about murder. All Hasbro has to do is call them "tokens", not murder weapons, or even weapons at all. And they could follow the Monopoly path -- first adding a 7th "token" to the standard game, as they evidently have already done with the Silver Line edition (since only experienced Clue players would know all 7 aren't part of a standard game), then have a campaign to reduce the tokens back to a standard set of 6, replacing one of them with a new token. Ultimately, they could introduce an edition with all the weapons tokens ever included, along with some new ones, and choose the top 6 most popular. That also allows them to test the waters slowly, rather than just jumping into a massive and expensive marketing campaign with potentially dozens of tokens.

As far as the axe goes, yes they reintroduced it in DTS, but I assume you mean a "standard edition" version as opposed to one of the spinoff games in which is was included as a more deluxe token? I'd still prefer they redesign it to better match the existing set of tokens. Those DTS tokens were incredibly cheap -- it's like they decided they had to make all 9 tokens out of the same amount of metal the previous 6 had been made out of.
