Has this ever happened for any of the 3D versions or just with this 2D mutant?

It looks like it happened with the 2D mutant. Just a quick look at the Restoration Hardware 3D versions and they both seem correct, as well as the Frontage version. However, both the original RH, FG versions had the moving spaces reversed between the Hall and Center (2) and Ballroom and center (1). The latest RH & WS version fixes that problem. So it's really odd that WS would not catch and correct this simple change upon re-issuing it.

The inside is hollow. It just has some wood stoppers so the drawer doesn't go in too far.

I guess the FM edition is the same way, but the fact that the door spaces don't align with the artwork is really noticeable on a flat surface.

Lastly, the box reverse:

I had to come back and look at this again ...

All things considered, with better artwork, I think this looks like the ideal "luxury" clue game format. I like that the drawer holds everything together in one case. And I suppose you could hide valuables behind the drawer too ... I didn't see an instruction booklet, does that fit in the drawer too?

Michael, how do you like the dark gray marble tiles, instead of the typical green, or beige options of the Frontgate and current RH version? It might actually be the most appropriate option for a dark and moody edition.

What would improve this game would be maybe recessed rooms -- even just a slight 1/8 inch drop into each room, so the pieces couldn't slide around the board, and also give a sense of entering a separate space. At this scale, it's even more important as I look at the marketing photo on the box, since the furniture takes up so much room; it's the same problem I have with playing the smaller FM re-issues without glass. Also -- real pewter furniture sculptures for a game that costs this much retail. Silver might actually go a lot better with this game than the beige and brown color scheme of the new RH edition. And a glass top would be nice, which would turn this into a very cool display peice, with staged clue vignettes below it.

But I still go back to your original comment about wanting some new artwork and having 5 versions of the FM design. There needs to be some new luxury artwork that better befits these more modern luxury editions. The FM artwork goes with that style which the older re-issues attempted to capture. The current RH, and this box are more modern and don't mesh very well with the Victorian artwork. And if they're going with a 2D approach, the room art needs to be redrawn so that other objects appear in relief, whether they change the style of designs or not.
