Television Cliches That Drive You Nuts

Post by Jane Poirot » Mon Apr 11, 2011 3:10 am

Similar to the movie cliches topic, this topic deals with cliches commonly found in television yet not found quite as often in movies because of the differing medium. What cliches in TV do you see that just drive you nuts? Two things that drive me insane are:

1) Sitcom laughter. Kill it with fire. Don't TELL us that a joke is funny; SHOW us it's funny from the way a character says the line, or the look the characters give each other, or...or SOMETHING. It doesn't automatically kill a sitcom for me, but it does when it's played over just about anything. (And no, do not use this as an oppurtunity to go on about how Disney sitcoms do this--it's not just them, nearly every sitcom on TV does it, Disney just jumped on the bandwagon, that is it, that horse left the stable)

2) When a female character's pregnancy is set up as either a dramatic storyline, a comedic storyline, or a mixture of the two, for an entire season, she gives birth in the season finale, she takes care of it for the first few episodes the following season and then bam--the kid is seldom ever mentioned again, or brought back into the current storylines, and there's usually a throwaway excuse like "so and so is watching the baby". It makes it pathetically obvious that the writers have never had children, and don't know anyone with children. And besides, there are so many potential storylines you can use a baby for, in a drama or a sitcom or any combination of the two; why waste that potential?
Anyone who thinks Canadians are meek and mild-mannered has obviously never seen us during Question Period!

Mine is how when a woman does a home pregnancy test, she waves around the stick she just peed on like it is an air freshener.

Whenever someone diffuses a bomb, its never done with 10 minutes left, its always with 1 second left on the timer.

Parents are idiots, and the kids know everything they need to.
