New Painting

Post by TheWhitePawn » Wed Jun 24, 2009 4:09 pm

Hey guys. So I started a new painting a few days ago. I've been taking some pictures and figured I would share.

The first one should look familiar cuz, if it isn't obvious, this one will also be an Egyptian-themed picture taking place in Alexandria. This canvas is 4 feet by 2 feet, so it's a little bigger than my previous painting. I've been trying different angles and lighting, and can never truly get it perfect, so I decided to take a close up picture for detail and a farther one for the proper contrast and colors.

I don't fully like to reveal what I'm painting until it's done, cuz the image kind of forms in my head as I paint. I don't think this painting will take as many months as the last one since it's summer and I only have one class, so I'm sure you'll see the finished product in no time anyway :D

How old are you and how much do you charge for a commissioned work?

Thanks so much guys.

And Kristev...

I'm 22. And the only time I was ever paid for a piece of artwork was when I was like 13 and did a sketch of a family friend, lol. Actually, painting is relatively new to me, but I have been drawing since I was in diapers.

For those of you who haven't seen it... Here is my previous painting of Cleopatra that I did a few months ago. I consider it to be my first true painting because any painting I did before that was when I was a kid with cheap little watercolors, lol.

How much would you charge to do a painting for a book cover?

Well, I have truly gone above and beyond today. I spent a lot of time painting and I did a lot more than I thought I would accomplish. At this rate, this painting will be done in no time!

I'll post some pictures if I have time tomorrow, when the light is better.

Okay, so I finally got around to taking those pictures. I had a lot of issued with glare today. But that might be cuz I'm taking them at a different time of day. I couldn't take a really good distant image, and had to use the flash. That's why the brown looks brighter.

I'll try taking more tomorrow morning.

The columns in the image are nowhere near finished, but I'm glad to see the background coming together so well. They're all going to be decorated and colorful eventually. Maybe I'll start that tomorrow. We'll see.

The floor is going to be repainted and decorated too.

I love watching this progress!
How do you know what kind of pictures they are if you're such a lay-dee?

Thanks :D

I can't wait to start painting the columns. I think that may be the hardest part of the painting, but it'll totally be worth the work.

So I finished painting the tops of the columns, but I'll wait until the whole things are done before posting more pictures.

In case you guys haven't noticed, I took a break from my new painting, but I have spent the past 2 months painting my newest work, which I am happy to say is complete as of today. Picture attached below.

Although it is the Pharos Lighthouse of Alexandria (which I am extremely fond of), it's also supposed to be a more abstract version of it. Hence, the beautiful statues at the edges of the first level have been replaced by giant thorn-like protrusions. The statue of Zeus at the top (which actually held a torch which could be turned to follow the sun's path across the sky) is now holding a large banner. The windows, too, are much larger than they normally would have been (the lighthouse was approx. 450 feet tall) and the lower windows stretch out into the sea. The edge of the tower also turns into the wave which is crashing upon it.

I painted it for Tony. He likes abstract-ish art. And although I would not classify this as "Abstract," it's much less realistic than my other paintings.

The painting is 2' x 3'

That's the same thing my best friend said, cacums! LoL... yes, it's very tower-ish. But the tower is usually falling apart, whereas the lighthouse retains its majestic beauty.
