My two Paul Halter novels arrived quite unexpectedly yesterday while I was in the middle of studying. It's very exciting to finally hold this guy's works in my hand- I can hardly wait to start reading! (But wait I must...)

I watched Oliver! for the first time in ages yesterday. It's still a delightful movie, and once again proved to me why it was my favourite movie musical ever. In the Oom-pah-pah song, for instance, everyone burts into song, but it must be the most realistic way of handling such a sequence I've ever ...

Oh, sorry, I thought it would be clear when I quoted my earlier post about deciding to quit playing Mafia Wars.

I suppose my quitting Mafia Wars can count as a resolution, although I really didn't intend it as one. That game was pretty fun for a while, but it's just not worth the time and effort required to be any good in it. Anyone still remember their New Years' resolutions? I've kept good on my quasi-reso...

It wouldn't work. It takes a tremendous amount of force, and it's hard to chop someone's head off with a knife as it is. Trust me, I've come across plenty of beheading in my reading... The bomb is too messy, impractical, and far-fetched for me. I'd prefer either the poker or the shillelagh. W...

...and then Raymond Chandler tried to be artistic. Forget what I said about The Long Goodbye . It's veritably awful. It had a great start which would've made a great short story or novella. Now it's grasping at straws to expand it into a 400 page book. I've now passed a point in the book where I can...

When I saw this trailer for Your Highness, I thought it might be somewhat amusing. But then I saw the restricted trailer and was disappointed. The jokes I liked in the original trailer were a lot poorer, and the pointless profanity just wasn't funny... but it's like the filmmakers expected it to be.

My sister and I were trying to figure out what kind of movie we could turn on for the kids to watch. I suddenly remembered we had Babe , that lovely little movie about the sheppdog-pig. My sister didn't remember it at all. So I typed "Babe" into Google with the expectation I'd show her the movie pos...

Turns out all those years of French Immersion and suffering through an awful high school might pay off after all. Apparently, Paul Halter, a French mystery author, has apparently written excellent "impossible" mystery novels that have barely been translated into English... Only one thus far... :D I ...

I got started on Raymond Chandler's The Long Goodbye . I hated The Big Sleep and found it pathetically inept in just about every way. I also can't stand Chandler's essay The Simple Art of Murder which gets so much wrong. (To sum up his views quickly, it's basically like saying the only way a musical...

Got started on Boucher's Nine Times Nine , and it's a brilliant read- both funny and a puzzling impossible scenario at the same time. It's definitely got Carrian elements to it- it reads very much like a tribute to John D ickson Carr. And then there are some really great lines like this: “Because ...
